Teofilo Chantre

Téofilo Chantre began writing music at the age of 16, three years after he arrived in France from his native Sãão Nicolau Island, in Cape Verde. In 1991 he met José da Silva, Cesaria Evora's producer, and offered him his songs. Three of them were to be included in the Miss Perfumado album, Evora's biggest success to this day.

In 1994, Chantre himself went into the studio and made Terra & Cretcheu, produced by Paulino Vieira, Evora's artistic director.
In 1995 he wrote the waltz "Flor na Paul" that figured on Evora's new album, as well as the song "Ausencia" for the sound track of Emir Kusturica's Underground. During the same period, he put together a new group featuring a flexible combination of accordion, bass and guitar which adapts easily to the environment of both clubs and concert halls.
